Our community, particularly Muslim people, needs to have a certainty on the halalness status of their daily consumption products. Because, uncertainty will cause social restless and spiritual in tranquility.
MUI (Majelis Ulama Indonesia or Indonesian Council of Ulama) then, established LP.POM-MUI (Lembaga Pengkajian Pangan, Obat-obatan dan Kosmetika, or The Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics) on January 6, 1989. As an independent organization, this body is established under MUI, which has been appointed and assigned to support and studying products of food, drugs and cosmetics through an intensive research, investigation and audit, and then, submit the result to MUI. So that MUI can issue Halal/Haram Decree or Fatwa as a definitive status for the interest of our spiritual tranquility of Ummah. In this regard, LP.POM-MUI plays its role and performs the task and duty through scientific study, audits and investigations in production plants, and making laboratory analyses. This Halal fortress of Indonesia also prepares and compiles Halal Assurance System to be applied and implemented by the companies producing foods, drugs and cosmetics, particularly in Indonesia, including those companies exporting and marketing their products in this country. And furthermore, LP.POM-MUI also controls the implementation of the system. The whole data obtained, then, is submitted to the Fatwa Commission of MUI in the form of auditing report. And hence, based on the reports, the Fatwa commission will determine the halal/haram status of concerned products. To perform the task and duty, LP.POM-MUI is supported by more than 60 auditors and experts of various field and disciplines, such as food technology, industrial technology, chemistry, biochemistry, livestock, veterinary, pharmacy and other related fields. While for laboratory analyses, MUI cooperates with IPB (Institut Pertanian Bogor or Agricultural University of Bogor), using existed laboratory facilities in this university. So far, through the contributions and roles which have been playing for 18 years, LP.POM-MUI has been achieved in obtaining the increasing trust from our people, both consumers and producers as well. Not only the trust from our domestic community in particular, but also from international society in general. So this LP.POM-MUI can perform investigations and audits to various multinational corporations and become the reference for similar halal certification bodies of the world.
